We’re definitely in the coffee culture these days, with a coffee shop on every corner. Whether it’s meeting a friend for a catch up or business meetings, the coffee market is certainly making the most of our new found passion for Mr (Coffee) Bean!!
You may be a latte lover, or an espresso expert but the caffeine intake can have consequences. Caffeine can increase our cortisol levels (a hormone), which is released in response to stresses in the body. Cortisol suppresses the immune system and raises blood sugar levels, so high cortisol levels is the last thing you need if you are trying to reduced body fat and lose weight, as it will trigger your desire to eat!
Caffeine is also a stimulant and acts as a diuretic and can contribute to dehydration. Too many espressos, where the water content is low and caffeine intake is high, can cause a dehydrated state. Keep them to a minimum and keep the water intake high, to counteract.
A high caffeine in take, especially late at night, can impact the quality of sleep we receive. Sleep is essential for our recovery from all the activity of the day, so when you sleep your body is healing and detoxifying in readiness for the next day. Sleep is essential for our wellbeing and aids against stress.
We all have those stresses in life that we have to manage, some more impacting than others, finding some ME time throughout the day where you can be alone and relax with those things that alleviate the pressure, is essential. Learn to switch off. A stressed mind = raised cortisol.
I enjoy a coffee as much as anyone else, so let’s enjoy the vast array of great coffee houses we have on the island, keep meeting and enjoying the social aspect but being mindful of the excesses that impact us – that goes for all the other caffeine related products we take in too. And that goes for all you tea lovers and Coke fans too!!
